The National Forum On Europe, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the National Youth Council of Ireland are to hold a special Youth Forum to discuss the recent Communication on Youth from the European Commission. The document focuses on the European Union’s role in promoting young people’s full participation in education, employment and society.
This event will gather together a selection of participants from the Forum’s wide-ranging Youth programme in recent years. It will include representatives of six National Youth Fora, held in Dublin, Cork, Sligo, Limerick and Waterford in the past two years as well as finalists from the Forum’s Transition Year Public Speaking Competition. It will also include representatives from members organisations of the National Forum On Europe and National Youth Council of Ireland.
The Youth Forum will take place from 10am to 4pm on Thursday 18th October in Farmleigh House in Dublin’s Phoenix Park . The morning session will provide an opportunity for young people to explore the issues in small informal discussion groups. Members of the Communication Group of the European Economic and Social Committee will also participate in the debates. The outcomes of the morning deliberations will then be debated with a panel of Forum Members in the afternoon, which will include senior figures in national politics and civil society. These discussions will then be incorporated into the results of the wider debate taking place within the Forum at national level.
These debates will form part of the next Chairman’s report to go to Government. The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD, in a recent address to the Forum, noted that these reports are “an important contribution to the development of policy on Europe.” At European level, the deliberations will also become part of the formal record of the EESC. This upcoming forum should therefore be seen as a valuable opportunity for young people to make a meaningful contribution to their future.
The conference is aimed at young people over fifteen years old. Email: eyou@forumoneurope.ie or call 016705900 for further information
DEBATE TO THE FUTURE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
Where: NUI, Galway
When: Saturday, 3rd November 2007
Time: 10am to 4pm
Minimum Age: Sixteen Years Old
Cost: None (Lunch is provided and travel expenses will be reimbursed)
The next National Youth Forum, which is being jointly organised by the National Forum On Europe and the National Youth Council of Ireland, will focus on the next steps for the European Union. Previous youth fora, held in Dublin, Cork, Sligo, Limerick and Waterford in the past two years, have attracted maximum attendances and have been commended as valuable and enjoyable events by participants and senior politicians who attended.
The youth forum will take place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday March 3rd in National University of Ireland, Galway. The morning session will provide an opportunity for young people to explore the issues in small informal discussion groups, with the help of skilled facilitators and experts.
The outcomes of the morning deliberations will then be debated with a panel of Forum Members in the afternoon, which will include senior figures in national politics and civil society. The findings of the one-day forum will be presented at a submissions hearing, by representatives from this event, to the main body of the National Forum On Europe in Dublin Castle in Spring 2008. These discussions will then be incorporated into the results of the wider debate taking place within the Forum at national level.
These debates will form part of the next Chairman’s report to go to Government. The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD, in a recent address to the Forum, noted that these reports are “an important contribution to the development of policy on Europe.” This upcoming forum should therefore be seen as a valuable opportunity for young people interested in the European Union and Ireland’s role in it to make a meaningful contribution.
The conference is aimed at all young people over sixteen years old.

The 3rd European Youth Week will take place from 3-10 June 2007. Events will be organised throughout Europe to promote the Youth in Action Programme and European Youth Policies, and to contribute to the structured dialogue with young people.
In Brussels, the event will give 175 young people from all parts of the European Union another chance to “take the floor” and, through open discussions and consultation, create a tangible contribution to the European Commission’s Plan D, which stands for Democracy, Dialogue and Debate.
One objective of Youth Week will be to promote and raise the awareness of the Youth in Action Programme, which has been launched concurrently. It will also highlight the achievements and success of projects supported by the previous Youth Programme, which ran from 2000-2006.
Participants will form working groups to discuss the main elements of the general theme “social inclusion and diversity of young people”, with the outcomes to be presented in a plenary session.
Finally, the attendees will also have the possibility to participate in a political round table debate attended by members of the European Commission.
The final conclusions of the Brussels event will be forwarded to the Commission and the Council of Youth Ministers, and is expected to be taken into account in their policy formulation.
3 Young Irish delegates are attending European Youth Week from Swords Youth Service.
